Projects

Global Fund Project :: History
The first ever one year diploma course in blood bankinf and transfusion medicine was designed in 1999 and Husaini Blood Bank involved in the academics with the name Husaini Institute of Hematology of in addition to its transfusion health care services. This academic activities created the gateway for Husaini to become one of the strong partner in National and International academic activities. In 2004, Global Fund Round-2 Blood Safety component, the training of professionals involved in blood banking, the most important objective of the project. Husaini was assigned as the main SR. This national training program was a challenging job which is been successfully completed and all targets of the project achieved. Project is now in closure phase.

Role Of Husaini Blood Bank
This is a global fund project awarded to Husaini through which 605 professionals (pathologist, doctors, technologist, technician & paramedical staff) from all Punjab, Sindh, NWFP, Balochistan, Northern Areas & AJK have been trained in safe blood techniques and screening of blood.

Federal Ministry of Health Islamabad and Health Department, Govt. of Sindh is also availing training facilities under facilitation of HBB for their pathologist, doctors, technologist, technician & paramedical staff. This training program has further strengthened the trust of health providers over the Husaini Transfusion Services. It also indicates the major role of Husaini in transfusion health care services.

Objective-2:
Prevention: Blood Safety & Universal precautionProject plan for training of staff in safe blood techniques and screening of blood and blood products for HIV and other blood borne infections in the NGO run blood banks.

Goals

  • To response the HIV/AIDS outbreak among voluntary Blood donors.
  • To improve the capacity building of NGOs and non-profit blood bank staff.
  • To Reassess strategies and formulate appropriate responses in safe blood techniques and screening.
  • To motivate the key Influential Persons to play their role in safe blood transfusion services in Pakistan.
  • Development of National Guidelines/Training material for training of non profit blood bank staff
  • Networking/Collaboration with local organizations working in Blood Transfusion services.
  • To disseminate information to communities including high-risk groups though trained public/private health care providers on HIV/AIDS.

Community Project
It is one of the unique project for a community designed in 2005. This activity was initiated by screening community school & college students for thalassaemia minor. A seminar was arranged attended by more than 500 members of the community. Project team addressed the participants through their professional knowledge and skills resulting that all the members of the community showed their keen interest to start their family screening against Hepatitis B, C, Tuberculosis and the carriers of Thalassaemia minor. 2462 members of the community tested their family members at Husaini. The most successful story of the project was the compulsory pre-marriage thalassaemia minor screening of the couples. It was one of the first ever pre-marriage testing become an example for other communities. The project completed in 2006.

Earthquake Project
In response to earthquake in the northern areas on October 8,2005 a joint operation of Hussaini Blood Bank, and Blood bank, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center(JPMC), was launched to assess the immediate need of blood transfusion services in the earth quake affected areas and strengthen these services accordingly to their specific needs in term of requirement of safe blood, consumables, equipments, and technical manpower.

A strong team of 9 members including doctors, medical technicologists, and philontherpist was dispatched to the effected areas on Oct 11,2005. Two senior blood bank officers immediately visited Abbottabad, Mansehra, and Muzzafarabad to carry out situation analysis and develop appropriate response.

In addition to the blood transfusion services, the project team thoroughly observed the medical/surgical facilities available for injured victims of the earthquake in various hospitals. And help and support the local management in solving the deficiencies found in treatment of the patients i.e. lack of professional skills, sterilization, improper operation theatres, unavailability of the orthopedic implants. Success achievement was that none of the victim of the earthquake expired due to unavailability of blood.
